Kampala, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Kampala Tuesday successfully intercepted a gang of thieves believed to be behind the robbery of items worth Shs25 million at Best Rates Forex Bureau at Capital Shoppers in Ntinda five months ago.
Preliminary information gathered indicates that the thugs, who are currently on the run, reportedly stole Shs 23,400,000, two Apple watches valued at Shs 3,500,000, three original land agreements, UAP insurance cards, and business documents when thieves broke into his vehicle on August 23, 2024.
The thieves had gone on the run until Tuesday (January 28) when Echodu glanced at them, thankfully his memory was still as sharp as ‘yesterday’. He immediately alerted the police who swung in for a covert operation.
“Upon receiving the information, the police dispatched a team to verify the information and arrest the suspects,” the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said when contacted on the gunshots heard in Ntinda on Tuesday afternoon.
He said officers found the suspected thieves attempting to flee in their vehicle. “When the team arrived at the scene, the suspected thieves sped away in their car” – a Toyota Harrier (registration UBQ 618M).”
Gunshots would be heard near Kaloli-Lwanga Tower in Ntinda as an officer shot at the runaway car in an attempt to intercept the thieves. People screamed and scattered, shopkeepers dived behind counters, and boda boda riders abandoned their bikes, ducking for cover.
“Despite the police deflating their tires, the suspects continued driving until they abandoned their vehicle on Commercial Road and fled on foot,” the KMP spox added.
Police later recovered a range of items from the abandoned vehicle, including the car itself a dark blue Harrier with registration number UBQ 618M along with a pair of number plates (UBN 127F), master keys, breaking tools, a power bank, clothing items, a rolled stick of opium, a matchbox, and a black laptop bag.
Police also found a black laptop bag, a power bank, and a pair of fake number plates (UBN 127F), suggesting the car itself might have been stolen.
The vehicle was towed to Ntinda Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
“We are currently following up on leads to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in this crime,” said the KMP spokesperson.
Kampala Metropolitan has seen a rise in robberies involving gangs that trail individuals from banks or forex bureaus, ambushing them on the road with high-speed motorcycles and cars
Earlier this month, police shot dead six suspected bank robbers during an operation in Kamwokya aimed at foiling a similar robbery attempt.
