Uganda Airlines suspends flights to Kinshasha amid escalating unrest

Kampala, (UG):- Uganda Airlines has announced the immediate suspension of its flights to Kinshasa in response to escalating unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The decision follows a series of riots in the DRC capital that led to the looting and partial burning of Uganda’s embassy for allegedly supporting the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels, an allegation which the Ugandan government has strongly denied.

In a statement released Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Uganda Airlines explained that the suspension was necessary due to the ongoing instability in Kinshasa.

“The suspension has become necessary as a result of the ongoing unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including in the capital Kinshasa,” the statement read. “Flights will remain suspended until the situation warrants normal operations.”

This move comes amid growing violence in eastern DRC, where M23 rebels have taken control of strategic areas, including Goma. According to the United Nations, the conflict has displaced more than 400,000 people since the beginning of 2025.

Uganda Airlines had previously operated three weekly flights to Kinshasa, a route designed to enhance connectivity between the two neighbouring nations.

The airline did not announce when flights will resume.
