Kampala, (UG):- The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled City lawyer Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as its flagbearer for the Kawempe North by-election.
“Our Official flag bearer for Kawempe North by-election is Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola who has been declared by our Election Management Committee this Tuesday morning,” NUP posted via its official account this morning.
Nalukoola, who is now a favourite candidate to win the March 13 by-election, beat stiff competition in a crowded party race that included nine other aspirants, including the former aide and confidante of the late Ssegirinya, Muhammad Lussa Luwemba, who had to change his name, religion and even invoke divine help from the late’s graveyard to win the ticket.
Other aspirants included; Umar Magala, Mathias Mulumba, Moses Nsereko, Salim Sserunkuuma, Fredrick KaKIika, Charles Rubagumya, Kenneth Ssekungu and Saul Kulya Zziwa.
Shortly after being announced as the official NUP flag bearer on Tuesday morning, Nalukoola, a seasoned lawyer and former member of the Democratic Party addressed supporters at the party’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Kampala and expressed heartfelt appreciation for the trust put in him.
“I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to NUP for blessing me to be the party flagbearer for Kawempe North MP seat. I am a loyal member of the National Unity Platform whose party affiliation should not be put to the question,” he stated.
The position for Kawempe North MP fell vacant with the passing of Ssegirinya who died on January 9, 2025, at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala.
