Absa Bank, Bugisu Cooperative Union, partner to boost coffee productivity

Mbale, (UG):- Uganda’s premier banking institution; Absa Bank has joined hands with Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU) in a bid to fuel the growth of Bugisu’s coffee sector and enhance financial support for farmers, improve logistics, and drive productivity across the region.

The partnership was unveiled on Thursday afternoon when the ABSA Bank Kampala team paid a courtesy visit to BCU to recognize the union as a top client and strengthen their working relationship, all aimed at enhancing coffee productivity. 

Mr. David Wandera, the Interim Managing Director Absa who led the delegation, stated that the visit was an opportunity to tour the union and explore more ways to strengthen their partnership.

He highlighted that ABSA has introduced several financial products to support coffee farmers, including affordable agricultural loans, factory repairs, invoice discounts, and the acquisition of new trucks to improve coffee transportation. 

“Our team engaged with the leadership of BCU to explore how Absa’s business banking solutions can further support Uganda’s thriving coffee industry,” the bank stated in a social media update via X, formerly Twitter.

“From agribusiness financing to trade solutions and value chain support, we recognize the pivotal role agriculture plays in shaping Uganda’s economy,” Absa added.

BCU General Manager, Barbra Wasagali, welcomed the team and acknowledged the union’s progress in exports and banking, emphasizing that farmers receive their payments efficiently through ABSA. 

She noted that ABSA’s proposals would be presented to the board for discussion and consideration. Wasagali also expressed her gratitude to ABSA for their visit and continued support.

By enabling cooperatives like BCU with the right financial tools, Absa remains optimistic that farmers will have access to working capital, modern processing infrastructure, and international markets; allowing them to write even greater success stories in the coffee trade.
