Profile Background
Born in April 1955 in Kameke Village, Pallisa District, Odomel excelled academically, earning a place at Lango College for secondary education before joining Makerere University, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.
Odomel served as IGP from 1992 to 1998. During his tenure, he was recognized for his efforts to professionalize the police force, making it more technocratic and efficient.
After retiring from the police force, Odomel ventured into politics. In 2001, he contested the Pallisa County parliamentary seat, receiving support from Movement heavyweights.
However, he was unsuccessful in his bid. In September 2006, Odomel lost a petition challenging the election of Pallisa MP Louis Opange. The court dismissed his petition, stating that he failed to prove any of the grounds for the petition.
Odomel was awarded the Exemplary Service Medal Class One in 2010 in recognition of his service to the police. The late was married to Mary Magdalene Aino Odomel, who passed away in October 2024.
Odomel’s passing comes just days after the death of another former IGP, Okoth Ogola.
