Court remands two more suspects in Shs2.2b fraud case involving lawyer David Balondemu

Kampala, (UG):- The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), has arraigned two additional suspects in connection with a UGX 2.2 billion fraud case involving an American company, KG Unlimited LLC.

The suspects, identified as Kasenge Martin, also known as Tumusiime Denis, a businessman and Kaweesa Ronald, a painter, Friday appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court on charges of electronic fraud, obtaining money by false pretenses, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation that previously led to the charging of City Lawyer David Balondemu, the former Chairperson of the Kampala District Land Board, along with Mkwe Eric, Ibona Joseph, and others.

The group is accused of defrauding KG Unlimited LLC of UGX 2.2 billion between November 2022 and April 2023. The alleged scheme involved misleading the investors into believing they had secured a contract with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries for the procurement and supply of a water plant a contract that did not exist.

Investigations indicate that the funds were funnelled through M/s Bloom Advocates, with Kaweesa Ronald receiving the money on behalf of the alleged fraudsters.

This case adds to a series of legal challenges faced by David Balondemu. In October 2023, he was remanded to Luzira Prison on charges of obtaining money by false pretenses, related to allegations of defrauding a Korean investor, Hyun Uk Kim, of $600,000 in a fraudulent gold deal.

Despite initial dismissals of some charges due to insufficient evidence, the DPP reinstated multiple fraud charges against Balondemu in November 2024, citing new evidence.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit vowed to continue collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure that individuals involved in such fraudulent activities are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, the two suspects were remanded until February 26, 2025.
