Namagabi SS to host 37th edition of UMEA Solidarity Games

Kayunga, (UG):– The 37th edition of the UMEA Solidarity Games is set to take place from April 17 to April 22, 2025, at Namagabi Secondary School in Kayunga District, with over 100 schools from across the country expected to compete in various sporting disciplines.

The official launch of the tournament was held earlier this week at Namagabi SS, signaling the start of preparations. This will be the third time the school hosts the event, having previously done so in past years.

Known for its strong sports culture and well-equipped facilities, Namagabi SS is expected to provide a suitable environment for the large number of participants.

Hajji Kasirye Yusuf, the head teacher, Namagabi SS, this year’s host, assured participants that the games will be exceptional, as all pitches have been fully prepared to accommodate different sports simultaneously.

Wide Range of Sports and New Additions

The 2025 UMEA Solidarity Games will feature a diverse selection of sports, including: Football, Netball (girls only), Volleyball, Handball, Table Tennis, Woodball and Badminton

In an exciting new development, this edition will also introduce mind games such as chess and scrabble, aimed at enhancing students’ intellectual abilities. UMEA Chairman, Mr. Kitezaala Katumba Twaibu emphasized that this addition is meant to promote mental agility alongside physical prowess.

Participating schools will compete in both boys’ and girls’ categories across most disciplines, with trophies awarded to the best teams and individual performers.

In the 2024 edition, Kibuli Secondary School emerged as the overall champions after winning three gold medals in table tennis (boys and girls) and badminton (boys). Kawanda Secondary School excelled in netball and handball (girls), while Masaka Secondary School triumphed in boys’ football, defeating Madinah Islamic in a thrilling final.

This year, the competition is expected to be even tougher, with over 1,200 students participating in various disciplines. The games will serve as a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent, build sportsmanship, and foster unity among students from different schools.

Rich History and 2025 Schedule

The UMEA Solidarity Games were first established in 1998 and rebranded in 2013. The games have grown in scale over the years, becoming one of the most anticipated sports events in the region.

The 2025 edition will mark the 10th tournament since the rebranding, reflecting its growing significance in Uganda’s school sports calendar.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for Good Friday, April 18, 2025, with competitions running through Easter Monday, April 21. Participating schools will report on April 17, ensuring a full week of exciting sports action and camaraderie.
