Bukedea, Uganda:- Tragedy struck Suula village, Kocheka Sub County, Bukedea District, after a 33-year-old man, Joseph Osuban, was found dead by hanging in his uncle’s bedroom on Monday, March 31, 2025.
Osuban had visited his uncle, Mr. Simon Opiri, for several days and was scheduled to end his visit and travel back to Serere District yesterday when tragedy hit under yet-to-be known circumstances.
According to the deceased’s uncle, Mr Opiri, Osuban handed him a phone to speak with his mother, who was requesting that he find him means of transporting back to Serere.
“My cousin approached me saying his mother wanted to talk to me on the phone. She asked me to get him a taxi that goes up to Serere. As I was preparing to get the taxi, he disappeared. We looked around the entire house, only to find his body hanging inside my room,” Mr. Opiri recounted, visibly shaken by the ordeal.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the entire village, with many questioning the circumstances that led to the young man’s tragic death.
According to Mr. Justin Tukei, the Itekok Itararam clan chairperson in Kanyimu town council, Osuban may have been dealing with unresolved personal issues.
“We had a rumor that the deceased had a girlfriend in Kabelebyong District, so we have failed to understand whether they had issues, and it’s a reason why he came back to this side,” Mr. Tukei remarked.
Mr. Michael Oloko, the Nyakoi clan chairperson, confirmed that Osuban used a piece of cloth to hang himself.
The Bukedea District Police Commander, Mr. Emmy Lorika, confirmed that police had visited the scene and conducted preliminary investigations. “It was ascertained that the body of the deceased had no external injuries apart from the neck, which was bruised by the piece of cloth he used to take his life,” Mr. Lorika stated.
The DPC urged residents to seek amicable solutions to family disputes through local council courts rather than resorting to suicide.
The tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about mental health and social pressures, with leaders emphasizing the importance of dialogue and conflict resolution.
