Uganda’s U-15 athletes flagged off for ISF Gymnasiade in Serbia

Kampala, Uganda:- Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports Wednesday flagged off a 47-member contingent to represent the East African nation at the upcoming ISF U-15 Gymnasiade in Zlatibor, Serbia.

The ceremony, held at Copper Chimney in Lugogo on Wednesday, was graced by education officials, sports administrators, and the young athletes who will carry Uganda’s flag at the international competition scheduled for April 4-14, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Cleophas Mugenyi, the Acting Director of Basic Education, emphasized how the athletes’ participation aligns with Uganda’s educational goals.

“The vision of the Ministry is excelling in education and sports,” Mugenyi stated. “Seeing these students represent the country confirms and affirms our vision as a nation.”

The official offered crucial advice to the departing athletes. “Discipline is key if you want to succeed in Serbia,” he stressed. “Uganda is well known for excellence in athletics – when you travel, make Uganda proud and ensure our flag flies high.”

Mugyenyi expressed confidence in the team’s potential, adding, “Looking at you, Uganda is assured of a medal. I wish you all the best as you go out to conquer.”

The Ugandan team includes students from Seroma Christian High School and Kibuli Secondary School. Both schools will field boys’ and girls’ teams in table tennis, while Seroma will also compete in swimming and badminton.

Justus Mugisha, President of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association, commended the selected athletes. “I congratulate Kibuli S.S, Seroma Christian High School, and all the athletes for their hard work,” Mugisha said. “Uganda continues to rank among Africa’s top sporting nations.”

Sammy Odong, Assistant Commissioner for Physical Education, expressed optimism about Uganda’s prospects. “Our athletes have shown tremendous dedication in training,” Odong noted. “We believe they will represent Uganda with distinction.”

The ISF Gymnasiade, first held in Belgrade in 2021, returns to Serbia for its 2025 edition. The event will bring together young athletes from around the world to compete in 25 sports, including para sports like para athletics, para badminton, and para swimming. Uganda will participate in four disciplines: athletics, badminton, swimming, and table tennis.
