WAKISO, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Kajjansi Division are investigating the circumstances under which armed thugs shot and injured two civilians in an aggravated robbery that occurred on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Lweza Cell A, Ndejje Division, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident occurred around 6 pm when “Two unidentified men on a red Haojue motorcycle (Reg. UGG 774A) attacked a parked Toyota Premio (Reg. UBE 079Z) outside N & M Unisex Salon.”
Armed with an AK-47 rifle, the assailants shattered the vehicle’s windows and stole two bags.
During their escape, Owoyesigyire explained that the suspects were confronted by boda boda rider Tumwesigye Peter, 27, and another individual, Abdul Swabur, 18.
“While fleeing, they were confronted by a boda boda rider, Tumwesigye Peter (27), who, along with Abdul Swabur (18), was shot and injured. Both were taken to Mildmay Hospital; Swabur was later referred to Mulago Referral Hospital,” Mr Owoyesigyire in a Saturday morning statement.
A joint effort by boda boda riders, local residents, and police led to the pursuit and neutralization of one suspect while the other fled.
Recovered at the scene were an AK-47 rifle, the red Haojue motorcycle, one cartridge, a national ID suspected to belong to one of the assailants, two mobile phones, a red bag used to conceal the firearm, and a black bag with a ring spanner belonging to the victim.
ASP Owoyesigyire commended the swift response of the community and boda boda riders. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect.
Criminality in Kajjansi and Kampala Metropolitan Area
This incident is part of a series of criminal activities reported in the Kajjansi area.
In October 2023, a major police operation in Kajjansi led to the arrest of 35 suspects involved in burglary and theft. The operation targeted areas including Nakigalala Kifene, Lweza A and B, Kawotto B, and Makandwa-Kijapan, following public outcry over increased criminal activities.
Furthermore, in April 2024, police arrested three individuals linked to the murders of women in Kajjansi. The victims were reportedly abducted, robbed, and their bodies dumped in various locations around Kajjansi.
According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2024, the country saw a 4.1% decrease in reported crime cases, from 228,074 in 2023 to 218,715 in 2024. However, urban centers like Kampala Metropolitan South, which includes Kajjansi, continue to experience high crime rates.
In 2024, Kampala Metropolitan South recorded 15,353 cases, making it one of the top five regions with the highest crime rates in the country.
The most prevalent crimes reported include theft, assault, domestic violence, sex-related offenses, and break-ins. Despite the overall decline in crime, the persistence of such incidents in urban areas underscores the need for continued vigilance and community policing efforts.
To combat rising criminality, the Uganda Police Force recently launched the sub-county policing model, deploying 18 police officers per sub-county to ensure quick response to criminal activities.
