Kampala, Uganda: The Ruparelia family, headed by Billionaire Sudhir Ruparelia, has revealed that their son, Mr. Rajiv Ruparelia, will be cremated on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Hindu Crematorium in Lugogo, Kampala.

In a brief statement released Saturday evening, the family confirmed “with a deep and heavy heart” the passing of their son, who met his tragic death in a motor accident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Busabala flyover along the Munyonyo-Entebbe Expressway.

“It is with a deep and heavy heart that we announce the passing of our son Rajiv Ruparelia early this morning. Cremation will be held at the Hindu crematorium in Lugogo at 2.30 pm, Tuesday, 6th May 2025,” the statement read.

The family further noted that a vigil is ongoing at their Kololo residence and respectfully appealed for privacy during this difficult time.

“The family asks that their privacy be respected during this tough and trying time. Om Shanti,” the obituary message concluded.

Rajiv’s elder sister, Meera Ruparelia Kotecha, arrived in Kampala accompanied by her husband, Ravi Kotecha. Meera, who has been living in Dubai since giving birth to twins, was visibly emotional as she reunited with family.

Ravi Kotecha hails from a prominent Asian-Kenyan business family, and their wedding, held in London, was a lavish celebration of two powerful diasporic lineages.

Rajiv, 35, the only ‘known’ son of business mogul Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia and Jyotsna Ruparelia, perished when the sports car he was driving, a Nissan GTR, reg. UAT 638L, crashed and caught fire at the Busabala Flyover in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District.

The police in a Saturday morning statement confirmed that the accident occurred at approximately 1:54 AM and that he died on the spot.

Rajiv was the Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group and a key force behind its youthful transformation, overseeing the growth of subsidiaries like Speke Group of Hotels, Kampala Parents School, and Victoria University.
