Kampala: Uganda’s men national basketball team, the Silverbacks, have been drawn into a challenging Group D for the upcoming FIBA AfroBasket 2025 tournament, scheduled to take place from August 12 to 24 in Angola.
The draw, held on Thursday, placed Uganda alongside African basketball giants Senegal, Mali, and regional rivals Egypt.
Senegal, a five-time AfroBasket champion and bronze medalist in the 2021 edition, and Egypt, also five-time winners, are seen as favorites in the group. Mali, known for their physical play and depth, complete the lineup.
AfroBasket 2025 will be hosted across two Angolan cities, Namibe and the capital, Luanda.
The group stages will be played at the Pavilhao Multiusos Welwitschia Mirabilis in Namibe, a 3,500-seat facility, while the knockout phase will unfold at the 12,700-capacity Kilamba Arena in Luanda.
Defending champions Tunisia were drawn in Group B with Madagascar, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Hosts Angola lead Group C alongside South Sudan, Guinea, and Libya, while Group A features Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Cape Verde, and Rwanda.
