Ngora, Uganda: Greenlight Islamic Secondary School pulled off the biggest upset of the USSSA 2025 National Championship after eliminating tournament giants AMUS College in a dramatic penalty shootout on Saturday morning at Ngora High School grounds in Ngora District.
The tense round of 32 fixture ended goalless in normal time before Greenlight Islamic held their nerve to edge AMUS 4-3 on penalties, sending shockwaves across the tournament and knocking out one of the pre-tournament title contenders.
Wild celebrations erupted from the Greenlight camp as AMUS players collapsed to the turf in disbelief, their dreams cut short despite a dominant campaign leading into the knockout phase.
With the historic win, Greenlight Islamic now faces Uganda Martyrs SS in the round of 16. Martyrs advanced after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Standard High Ndejje and are among the teams tipped to make a deep run.
Elsewhere, tournament giants flexed their muscles in Saturday’s other round of 32 fixtures. Ten-time champions Kibuli SS thrashed Buziga Islamic 4-1 and now face Masaka SS, who crushed Kabalega SS 3-0.
Record champions St Mary’s Kitende also cruised through, dispatching Bishop Comboni College 3-0. Kitende will take on Blessed Sacrament Kimanya, who edged Mumsa High 1-0.
Buddo SS outclassed Bugisu High 3-0 to book a date with Wisdom SS, who hammered Lagwai Seeds 4-0. St Julian needed penalties to knock out hosts Ngora High 3-1 and will now face JIPRA, who edged Standard High Zzana in another shootout thriller.
Kawempe Muslim School were ruthless in their 4-0 win over Kisozi Seed and now prepare to face Bukedea Comprehensive, who advanced after a 5-4 penalty win over Mvara SS.
Other teams advancing include Kyaddondo, Kicwamba, Mentor SS, and Jinja Comprehensive.
