Hoima, Uganda: Kitende-based Vipers SC have been crowned champions of the 2024/25 Uganda Premier League following a dominant 2-0 victory over Kitara FC at Royal Park Grounds in Butema on Wednesday afternoon.
The win at Kitara’s home soil took Vipers to 68 points, four ahead of second-placed NEC FC with just one game to spare, rendering any other title challenge mathematically impossible.
The Venom’s youngster Gusto Mulongo gave the visitors the early lead in the 14th minute after capitalizing on a goalkeeping error by Kitara’s Farouk Yawe, who fumbled Allan Okello’s free kick to fire home from close range.
The title was sealed in the second half when veteran striker Yunus Ssentamu doubled the lead with a calm finish off a perfectly weighted Milton Karisa header, sparking celebrations on the Vipers touchline.
NEC FC had earlier edged SC Villa 1-0 at Wankulukuku, briefly keeping the title race alive, but Vipers’ win in Hoima extinguished all remaining doubts.
After a shock weekend loss to BUL FC, the Kitende-based side entered the clash needing three points from their final two games to confirm the title. Coach Charles Livingston Mbabazi’s men delivered in style.
Kitara FC, who are trailing Vipers 1-0 in the first leg of the Uganda Cup semifinal, rested several first-team players in preparation for the decisive return leg and will look to revenge on the venoms in their defence of the cup title.
The league crown is Vipers SC’s seventh in history and their latest since winning in the 2022/23 season. Their rise since their first title in 2010 has cemented their position as one of Uganda’s modern football powerhouses.
Vipers will now receive the Premier League trophy on the final matchday at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, when they host Soltilo Bright Stars FC.
