Kaliro Police arrest two over suspected cattle theft

Kaliro, Uganda: The Territorial Police in Kaliro District have arrested two suspects in connection with the theft of cattle following a high-speed pursuit that ended in a vehicle overturning.

The suspects, identified as Bwambale Moses (21), a boda boda rider from Kamwanyi Zone in Gayaza, and Muhwezi Living (22), a driver from Kazinga on Gayaza Road in Wakiso District, were intercepted at Nabigere village, Bugonza Parish, Namugongo Subcounty while transporting suspected stolen cattle in a Land Cruiser Prado TX registration number UBD 599U.

According to Busoga North police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, May 15, 2025, when residents spotted the vehicle suspiciously parked in a bush. Sensing foul play, they alerted the district police commander, prompting the standby squad to respond swiftly.

“On arrival, the vehicle was already on the move. Efforts to stop it failed, prompting a pursuit during which warning shots were fired. The vehicle eventually overturned,” Kasadha said, adding that the two suspects were arrested at the scene, and four heads of cattle were recovered.

One of the suspects, Muhwezi Living, sustained serious injuries during the crash and is currently receiving treatment at Bumanya Health Centre IV.

Police have recorded statements from witnesses and the owners of the recovered cattle as investigations continue.
