Man, 26, kills 20-year-old wife, child, and hangs self in Luuka

Luuka, Uganda: Police in Luuka District are investigating a tragic incident in Bugonza village, Nawaka Parish, Ikumbya Sub-county, where a 26-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife and baby daughter before committing suicide by hanging.

The suspect, identified as Mukasa Joshua, is said to have killed his 20-year-old wife, Kafuko Winnie, and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Tracy, before hanging himself on an avocado tree, just a few meters from the crime scene.

According to the area LC1 chairperson, Mr. Okurut John, the incident stemmed from persistent domestic violence. He said the couple had frequent disputes that local leaders had been trying to resolve.

“The two have been having misunderstandings, and as local authorities, we’ve been settling them. However, it’s very unfortunate that this has happened,” Okurut said, urging residents to always seek help from local leaders to resolve domestic conflicts peacefully.

Busoga North Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha confirmed the incident and revealed that preliminary findings point to domestic violence. He said Mukasa lured his wife by asking her to accompany him to a charcoal kiln on the day of the murder.

“It has been reported that the husband asked his wife to escort him to the charcoal kiln, and that was their last appearance while alive. This is where the man developed a bad spirit and killed his wife and child before committing suicide,” ASP Kasadha said in a statement on Thursday.

Police recovered a suicide note near the body, in which Mukasa cited domestic wrangles as the motive behind the killings. The note also revealed the location where he had left the bodies of his wife and child.

All three bodies were taken to Kiyunga Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue.
