Kampala, Uganda: Former Makerere University Guild President Lawrence Alionzi, popularly known as “Dangote,” officially joined the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Monday after quitting the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), which he said lacked ideological clarity and strategic direction.

Alionzi was formally received by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong and the party’s Director of Finance and Administration, Hajjat Medina Naham, in a closed-door meeting held at the party headquarters.

SG Todwong commended Alionzi for his bold political decision, describing it as a generational shift that strengthens the ruling party’s future.

“It is very humbling to see young and educated people join the NRM. The movement is not something to joke about, but it is permanent. It began with our grandfathers, moved to us, and it is time for us to pass it on to you, our children,” Todwong remarked.

Alionzi, who served as Makerere’s 88th Guild President on the NUP ticket, was accompanied by several youth leaders also defecting from the opposition. In a public statement shared after the event, Alionzi emphasized his focus on national challenges beyond partisan politics.

“My decision is not about individuals or parties, it’s about purpose. The real struggle we face is against poverty, disease, and illiteracy. I have chosen to step out of the commentary box and onto the pitch, so I can play my desired part,” he stated.

Dangote also declared his next political target as Mayor of Arua City in the 2026–2031 term and maintained that he leaves the opposition with “gratitude and respect, not bitterness.”

“I leave the opposition with gratitude and respect, not bitterness. I carry forward only lessons and Hope,” he said.
