UPDF troops complete UN aviation security training in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia (June 4, 2025): At least 15 Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel serving under the United Nations Guard Unit XI (UNGU XI) have successfully completed Level One Civil Aviation Security training, strengthening aviation safety operations in Somalia.

The certification ceremony, held at the UN compound in Mogadishu, was presided over by Ms. Qurat-Ain Sudozai, Director of Mission Support at the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), who praised the UPDF soldiers for their dedication and discipline.

“This achievement is a testament to the strong partnership between Uganda and UNSOS, built on years of trust and cooperation,” Ms. Sudozai noted. “Their commitment to training enhances security and strengthens aviation resilience in the region.”

The training is part of UNSOS’s broader mandate to build capacity among peacekeeping forces and regional institutions operating in complex mission environments.

Strengthening Mission Readiness

Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, Commander of UNGU XI, lauded the soldiers for their professionalism and emphasized that the certification would enhance their ability to respond to aviation-related threats.

“The knowledge and skills gained will enable our personnel to better respond to evolving threats and ensure the safety of aviation operations,” he said.

Mr. Ali Jama, Director of Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority, thanked UNSOS for supporting national capacity-building efforts and affirmed the Authority’s commitment to strengthening collaboration in civil aviation safety.

Among the graduates, Captain Alfred Obura shared that the course had improved his knowledge of aircraft security protocols, while Private Jacintha Amaniyo described the training as enriching and essential to her aviation duties in Somalia.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Civil Aviation Authority, UNSOS, and UPDF leadership under UNGU XI.
