Mbale City, Uganda: Residents of Busajja-Bwankuba B in Mbale City were gripped by shock and anger on Wednesday after a young woman, believed to be around 20 years old, was brutally murdered by two assailants in what locals described as a cold-blooded attack.
Eyewitnesses said the woman was cornered and hacked to death by the assailants in the early hours of June 11.
In an immediate response, enraged community members mounted a manhunt, capturing one of the suspects and lynching him before setting his body on fire. The second attacker managed to escape and remains at large.
Police later arrived and took both the body of the slain woman and that of the lynched suspect to the city mortuary. Authorities had not yet confirmed the identities of either the victim or the deceased suspect by press time.
The disturbing incident prompted renewed calls from residents for increased police presence and a permanent police station in the area, citing a recent spike in violent crime. The demand was presented to Assistant Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Kadimba Hussein, who visited the scene shortly after the violence.
Kadimba described the situation as “overwhelming,” noting that the murdered woman had recently been married. He condemned the growing wave of mob justice and linked the attackers’ conduct to rising drug abuse in the region.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promised to escalate their security concerns to the Mbale City security committee.
