Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Uganda’s Crested Cranes bounced back in commanding fashion at the 2025 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship, thrashing South Sudan 5-0 on Sunday evening to register their first win of the tournament.
After a narrow 1-0 loss to Burundi in their opening fixture, Uganda responded with a ruthless display at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, showcasing why they remain favourites and defending champions.
Sylvia Kabene was the star of the evening, netting a first-half hat-trick in a breathtaking performance that saw Uganda seal the game before halftime.
Kabene opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a well-taken finish, before Shamirah Nalugya doubled the lead four minutes later with a sublime free kick that left South Sudan’s goalkeeper rooted.
Skipper Zainah Namuleme made it 3-0 in the 16th minute from the penalty spot after a foul in the area.
Kabene returned with a second goal in the 22nd minute and completed her hat-trick in the 34th minute, as the Crested Cranes tore through a shaky South Sudan defence.
Uganda slowed the tempo in the second half but maintained control and composure, seeing out the game without conceding and preserving the clean sheet.
The emphatic result revitalizes Uganda’s campaign and boosts their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
Next up, the Crested Cranes face fierce rivals Kenya, who also come into the tie in fine form after dispatching Burundi 3-0. The clash, set for midweek, is anticipated to be one of the tournament’s headline showdowns.
