Morley Byekwaso, SC Villa part ways after disappointing UPL season

Former SC Villa head coach Morley Byekwaso speaks head of a league match last season. The tactician has officially left the club after one year at the helm.

Kampala, Uganda: Uganda Premier League side SC Villa have officially parted ways with head coach Morley Byekwaso, ending his tenure at the club after just one season in charge.

The club confirmed the development in a statement released on Wednesday, June 18, revealing that both parties had reached a mutual agreement to terminate the contract.

“SC Villa informs the public that it has mutually agreed to part ways with Head Coach Mr. Morley Byekwaso, effective 18th June 2025,” the club announced.

“This decision was reached following constructive discussions between the Club management and Coach Morley, with both parties agreeing that a mutual separation is in the best interest of the club moving forward,” it added.

Byekwaso, who previously managed KCCA FC, joined SC Villa in June 2023 as assistant coach before ascending to the top job. Under his first season alongside Serbian tactician Dusan Stojanovic, the duo delivered a historic Uganda Premier League title in the 2023/24 season, the club’s first league triumph since 2004.

However, the just-concluded 2024/25 campaign saw the Jogoos finish sixth with 45 points, a distant 24 points behind league champions Vipers SC. They were also knocked out in the Uganda Cup quarterfinals, again by Vipers, concluding a disappointing season for the country’s most decorated club.

Sources inside the club indicate the team’s underperformance significantly influenced the decision to sever ties, as the Jogoos look to realign ahead of the next campaign.

Despite his SC Villa exit, Byekwaso has already landed a new assignment. He will co-lead Uganda’s CHAN 2024 national team alongside Vipers SC coach Fred Muhumuza, under the supervision of Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put.

The CHAN tournament, reserved for home-based players, will be hosted across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania between August 2 and 30, 2025.

SC Villa had yet to confirm a replacement for Byekwaso, with more updates on the club’s technical direction expected in the coming weeks.
