Kampala, Uganda: Renowned Ugandan female musician and songbird Stecia Mayanja has officially announced her bid for Kampala Woman Member of Parliament in 2026, declaring her intention to run as an independent candidate.
Stecia, who recently returned from Canada, revealed that her decision to contest stems from a long-held ambition to serve Ugandans in a political capacity. She made it clear that she is not aligning with any political party and intends to battle for the seat on her own merit.
“I am not a joke. I am coming as an independent. I know what I want and I am determined to serve the people of Kampala,” she said.
Her return from Canada had sparked public speculation, with claims she had travelled in search of “greener pastures” after her music career waned. However, Stecia dismissed those allegations, clarifying that she went abroad for medical treatment and chose to return home after recovery.
“I didn’t run away. I went for treatment. Now that I’m well, I’ve come back to pursue my dream of representing my people,” she stated.

Stecia joins a growing list of contenders for the Kampala Woman MP seat, currently held by Hon. Shamim Malende of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Other aspirants who have expressed interest include Shamim Nanfuna and several other potential female figures within the city’s civic and political space.
The singer, once affiliated with the Golden Band and known for hit songs like Equalizer, says her political ambition is rooted in a desire to champion grassroots issues affecting women and the urban poor.
