Female suicide bomber killed in Kalerwe Market Bomb Scare

Security personnel cordon off Kalerwe Market after a suspected female suicide bomber was killed on site.

Kampala, Uganda: A suspected female suicide bomber has been killed in Kalerwe Market, Kampala, triggering panic in the city’s busy suburb as the Uganda Police bomb squad and security forces cordoned off the area on Sunday morning.

According to preliminary reports, the woman was intercepted by security personnel after being suspected of carrying an improvised explosive device (IED). She was fatally shot before she could detonate the device, averting what could have been a mass casualty attack in the densely populated market zone.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), which confirmed the incident in a social media post on X, stated that the bomb squad was on the ground conducting investigations to verify the nature of the explosive device and assess whether there are accomplices or remaining threats.

“A female suicide bomber has been killed in Kalerwe Market. The bomb squad is on the ground carrying out investigations,” the post read.

Security agencies have since sealed off the scene, while bomb experts from the Counter-Terrorism Directorate are sweeping the area for secondary devices. Eyewitnesses say they heard warning shots before a loud commotion, followed by the swift arrival of security personnel.

“The situation is under control. We commend the vigilance of the security teams,” a security source told DailyExpress on condition of anonymity.

The motive behind the suspected attack is yet to be determined, and authorities have not released the identity of the deceased suspect. However, intelligence sources are linking the incident to ongoing threats posed by terrorist groups operating in the region.
