Mawogola, Uganda: The Member of Parliament for Mawogola North, Hom Shartsi Kutesa Musherure, has withdrawn her candidature from the upcoming National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, citing the need to preserve party unity and shield her supporters from election-related trauma.

In a statement issued Sunday, June 22, 2025, Musherure revealed that her decision followed consultations with President Yoweri Museveni and discussions within her family. She said the decision was made “with a heavy heart,” but grounded in a commitment to national harmony and party cohesion.

“I have withdrawn my candidature for the position of the NRM flag bearer for Mawogola North for the period 2026–2031,” she announced. “This is out of respect for the President, to protect our supporters from threats and insecurity, and to safeguard the unity of our people and the NRM party.”

Musherure referenced the violent and contested 2021 NRM primaries in Sembabule District that marred the electoral process and left her supporters exposed to threats and brutality.

She emphasized that her decision was also motivated by a desire not to subject residents to similar political instability as experienced previously.

“The people of Mawogola North were not able to exercise their constitutional right to choose their leaders freely… It is therefore against this background that interventions to avert a similar situation have been considered,” the MP stated.

In her farewell note to constituents, Musherure thanked President Museveni, the people of Mawogola North, and her supporters for trusting her with leadership since 2021. She highlighted key achievements during her term, including improved infrastructure in roads, education, and health, as well as peace and stability in the area.

She gave special appreciation to her Goberrera Initiative team, which has been instrumental in monitoring government programs at the grassroots level, saying it has set “an example of how much we can achieve with dedication.”

“I take comfort in the belief that it is in the ashes of such setbacks that the seeds of future success germinate,” she concluded.

Musherure is the daughter of former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa. Her withdrawal opens up the political terrain in Mawogola North ahead of what is expected to be a tightly contested NRM primary election scheduled for July 16, 2025.
