Stella Nyanzi calls out NUP over lack of transparency ahead of 2026 elections

Outspoken Activist Dr Stella Nyanzi has called out NUP’s leadership over alleged secrecy and lack of inclusiveness ahead of the 2026 elections.

Kampala, Uganda: Outspoken Ugandan academic and political activist, Dr Stella Nyanzi, has launched a scathing attack on the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) for lacking transparency during the party’s closed-door delegates conference held on Monday.

Nyanzi, a known critic of both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and opposition parties, questioned why journalists and cameras were barred from the key event, yet NUP claims to champion openness and democratic reform.

“Secrecy stinks of lack of transparency in NUP! Why refuse cameras and journalists from observing a political party’s delegates’ conference?” Nyanzi posted on her social media platforms.

The event, led by party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), reportedly involved the selection and reaffirmation of party office bearers, many of whom served in similar roles during the last election cycle.

Dr Nyanzi challenged the legitimacy of those selections, demanding clarity on the legal framework that guided the internal processes. “What constitution was used to govern the selection of party office bearers? The opaque processes are suspicious and exclusionary!” she wondered.

The former Makerere lecturer accused NUP of mimicking the very practices it criticizes in the ruling government, calling out what she described as hypocrisy among the country’s opposition elites.

The controversial feminist and former Kampala Woman MP aspirant also reiterated her criticism of NUP’s failure to prioritize women’s leadership, referencing a recent argument she made about gender imbalance in the party’s top leadership structure.

“How can you fight a dictator when none of you allows women to hold equal power as men in your party?” she posed in a previous critique.
