Museveni picks NRM nomination forms today for National Chairman, Presidential Flagbearer

Kampala, Uganda: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is today, Saturday, June 28, 2025, expected to pick nomination forms to formally express his interest in retaining the positions of NRM National Chairman and Presidential Flagbearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.

According to the NRM Secretariat announcement, the long-awaited exercise will take place at exactly 12:00 PM at the party’s Electoral Commission Headquarters, Plot 13 Kyadondo Road in Kampala.

Senior party leaders, historicals, and supporters are anticipated to witness the occasion, which marks a critical milestone in the NRM’s roadmap toward 2026.

The President’s decision to seek another mandate is seen by analysts as a signal of continuity and consolidation within the ruling party structures.

NRM supporters, especially in Kampala, have expressed excitement and readiness to mobilize for the forthcoming campaigns. “Ffe kati tulinze kulayira come 2026,” an enthusiastic supporter near the NRM headquarters said this morning, vowing to stand firm behind Museveni’s candidature.

If nominated and endorsed by the party (as widely), Museveni will be seeking to extend his leadership as both NRM’s topmost organ head and Uganda’s president, roles he has held since 1986 when he shot to power in a guerrilla war that trounced the then existing government of Idi Amin Dada and Tito Okello Lutwa.

Meanwhile, this publication has also learnt that the expression of interest and form collection for all Central Executive Committee (CEC) positions is currently underway and will close on Tuesday, July 1, with formal nominations due on July 4.

Museveni’s move comes just days after Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, submitted his expression of interest to contest as the presidential flagbearer of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP).

The 42-year-old pop star-turned-politician will once again challenge Museveni, now 80, in what is shaping up to be a highly symbolic rematch of the 2021 elections.

For the NRM, Museveni’s leadership offers continuity, institutional control, and a legacy of security and infrastructure development. However, it also comes amid growing public fatigue, youth discontent, and internal calls for generational renewal.
