Museveni pledges support for Martyrs’ Shrines in Busoga, urges responsible wetland use

Kaliro, Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has pledged government support for the construction of new shrines in Busoga sub-region to honor Uganda’s revered martyrs, while calling for responsible land use and poverty eradication.

Addressing Christians who gathered in Kaliro District on Sunday, July 06, at the annual celebrations in honor of St. Gonzaga Gonza Bato, thr President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to preserving the country’s spiritual heritage.

“When the NRM came to power, I discussed with Cardinal Nsubuga to establish June 3 as a national holiday to honor those who died for freedom of worship, alongside Heroes Day on June 9 for political freedom,” Mr Museveni said.

He announced plans to support the construction of shrines dedicated to St. Gonzaga Gonza in Bugonza and St. Matia Mulumba in Kyebando, Mayuge, in the spirit of the renowned Catholic and Anglican shrines at Namugongo.

The President further pledged to facilitate the continued development of the Bishop Hannington Memorial Site in Kyando, Mayuge District.

“I appreciate Bishop Charles Wamika’s efforts to combat poverty and wish him a speedy recovery,” Museveni added, commending the Diocese of Jinja for championing socioeconomic transformation.

While in Kaliro, Museveni also raised concern over the misuse of wetlands and encouraged communities to adopt modern alternatives. “I noticed some misuse of wetlands; I encourage transitioning to fish farming and irrigation to maximize land productivity,” he advised.
