Kampala, Uganda: The Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has announced the launch of a nationwide fundraising campaign to mobilise financial support for the party’s activities and candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday evening, Kyagulanyi said that while many supporters had inquired over the years about how to contribute to NUP’s political efforts, the party had deliberately chosen to wait until “an opportune time when there is great need.”
“Over the past few years, many people have reached out asking how they can contribute financially and be part of our campaign to save the motherland. Our answer has always been that we would do that at an opportune time when there is great need,” the 2021 presidential runner-up wrote.
“As we approach the 2026 election, we shall need resources to campaign, support our candidates, and run many activities,” he added.
The NUP leader called on supporters to join the party on Monday, July 7, at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule for the official launch of the fundraising drive, which is expected to include both domestic and diaspora contributions.
The announcement marks the first formal fundraising initiative since the 2021 elections, when NUP emerged as Uganda’s main opposition party. Political analysts say the early mobilisation signals the party’s intent to mount an expansive grassroots campaign to challenge the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986.
The NUP has previously relied heavily on contributions from supporters abroad, particularly the Ugandan diaspora in North America and Europe. It was not immediately clear whether the new drive would include online platforms or crowdfunding portals to facilitate international donations.
Kyagulanyi’s announcement also comes amid an intensifying political climate as major parties gear up for the 2026 polls. The Electoral Commission has already published a revised roadmap for nominations, campaigns, and voting over the next year.
NUP officials are expected to unveil detailed fundraising mechanisms and accountability measures at Monday’s event.
