Jinja, Uganda: Police in Jinja City have arrested singers Mikie Wine and Dax Vibez, both younger brothers to National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, under circumstances that remain unclear.
The two were taken into custody in the wee hours of Monday morning, sparking outrage from supporters and fresh speculation over whether their arrest was politically motivated.
In a video circulating on social media, Mikie Wine and Dax Vibes claimed they were attacked and beaten by a group allegedly led by an NRM youth leader only identified as Yasin Ibra.
According to statements posted on Mikie Wine’s official Facebook page, the brothers had gone to Jinja Central Police Station to report the assault, but instead, they were themselves detained.
“Mikie Wine and his team were attacked and beaten up by a gang led by NRM youth leader in Jinja, commonly known as Yasin Ibra, but when they went to the police to report, instead tables turned and Mikie Wine and Dax Vibes were arrested,” the statement read.
Reports suggest Mikie Wine’s health deteriorated after the arrest, and he was later rushed to the hospital for treatment.
While both musicians have occasionally commented on Uganda’s political affairs in solidarity with their brother Bobi Wine, neither is known to hold any formal position in NUP.
Police had not issued an official statement explaining the reason for the arrest by the time we published this story, but the incident has already triggered heated debate online, with supporters demanding their immediate release and transparency about the circumstances.
A section of NUP supporters and fans have since launched the hashtag campaign #JusticeForMikieWineAndDaxVibes, calling on authorities to ensure the brothers’ safety and clarify whether the arrest was politically motivated or related to other matters.
