Kampala, Uganda: The Independent Electoral Commission of Uganda (EC) has revised key dates for nomination of candidates across various levels of the 2026 General Elections, affecting Presidential, Parliamentary, Local Government Councils, and Special Interest Groups (SIGs).
Addressing the media on Thursday, August 07, at the Commission headquarters in Kampala, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama announced that nomination timelines for Local Government Councils and Special Interest Group elections, initially scheduled for September 3 to 12, 2025, have now been disaggregated and rescheduled as follows:
District/City Level (Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, Councillors): For which nominations will run from Wednesday, 3rd to Friday, 5th September 2025, at the office of the respective District/City Returning Officer.
Municipality/City Division (Chairpersons and Councillors): Nominations will take place between Monday, 8th and Wednesday, 10th September 2025 at respective district offices.
Sub-county/Town/Municipal Divisions (Chairpersons and Councillors): Exercise set for Thursday, 11th to Wednesday, 24th September 2025, excluding weekends, to be held at the respective county headquarters.
Byabakama further revealed that nomination forms and guidelines for these positions will be available starting Monday, 11th August 2025, at the district EC offices.
For District Chairpersons, forms will be downloadable from the EC website at www.ec.or.ug.
Parliamentary, Presidential Nominations also Rescheduled
The Commission also pushed back the nomination dates for Parliamentary elections, including seats for Special Interest Groups. Initially scheduled for September 16–17, these will now occur on Wednesday, 15th and Thursday, 16th October 2025, at respective District/City Returning Officer offices.
Nomination forms and guidelines for these elections will also be available for download starting Monday, 11th August 2025, from the Commission’s website.
In preparation for the 2026 Presidential Elections, the Electoral Commission announced Monday, 11th August to Wednesday, 24th September 2025, as the official period for the collection of nomination forms and supporter lists.
During this window, presidential aspirants will collect nomination forms, supporter forms (requiring signatures from at least 100 registered voters from two-thirds of Uganda’s districts) and guidelines for nomination and related processes
These materials, Byabakama says, must be picked physically at the EC Head Office on Plot 1-3 & 5, 7th Street Industrial Area, Kampala, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on weekdays. He emphasized that the physical collection is to facilitate proper documentation and inform security and local officials of aspirants’ movement across the country.
Representatives of political parties must present written authorization from the party Secretary General or designated official. Independent aspirants must present proof of voter registration.
Byabakama urged all stakeholders to take note of the revised schedule and comply with the laid-out guidelines to ensure a smooth electoral process.
