Some of the suspects arrested during an intelligence-led operation targeting crime hotspots in the city suburbs.

Kampala, Uganda: The Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has arrested at least 47 suspects and impounded several motorcycles in a series of intelligence-led operations aimed at combating rising urban crime across different divisions.

According to KMP Spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, the operations targeted hotspots known for robberies, narcotics trade, and phone snatching in Nagalama, Katwe, Nalya, and Kira Municipality.

In Nagalama Town, police arrested four suspects accused of selling opium and marijuana. They face charges of possession of narcotic substances and frequenting places used for smoking opium.
Exhibits recovered from the operation include opium, knives, and marijuana, Onyango confirmed.

At Katwe Police Division, 25 suspects were apprehended during operations targeting criminal networks involved in robberies, burglaries, and phone snatching.

Police also impounded seven motorcycles with tilted number plates, which are believed to have been used in criminal activity.

In Naalya, the outskirts of Kampala, police arrested Kasita Matiya, a known robbery suspect allegedly linked to a string of snatching incidents. “Kasita was found with a panga, knives, and opium. He has been identified by several victims and is currently detained at Kira Police Division,” Onyango said.

Kira Municipality: 18 Nabbed in Drug Operations

Another 18 suspects were arrested in Kira Municipality, specifically in Nsasa, Bulindo, Katuli, Kigambo, and Namugongo, for possession of narcotic substances.

Police recovered exhibits of opium and marijuana, linking the suspects to an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking and related urban crime.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police emphasized that these operations are part of an ongoing crackdown to suppress urban criminal activities, including shop break-ins, burglaries, robberies, and drug abuse. “Our operations are continuous. We are committed to ensuring safety for all residents in the metropolitan area,” Onyango added.
