Kampala, Uganda: Security agencies have been put on high alert following reports of a planned women-led protest in Kampala demanding the release of detained activist Sarah Bireete, the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG).

According to information obtained by this publication, the protest is scheduled for January 1, 2026, and is expected to begin from Natete before proceeding toward the Kampala city centre.

The planned demonstration is intended to express anger over the recent arrest and continued detention of Sarah Bireete, whose case has sparked sharp debate among civil society organisations and opposition politicians.

A source familiar with the planning told reporters on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, that the protest is being coordinated by a group of prominent women activists, including Eunice Musiime, Executive Director of Akina Mama wa Africa; Edith Grace Ssempala, an Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) member; Rita Kase, associated with the Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET); and Flavia Nabagabe Kalule, the Kassanda District Woman MP and head of the Women’s League of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The source claimed that organisers are mobilising women and youth from various parts of the country to participate in the protest.

He further alleged that a fundraising drive, reportedly coordinated by Rita Kase, is being used to facilitate transport and provide small allowances to participants, although these claims had not been independently verified by press time.

“The women are planning to start the protest from Natete and march into Kampala. They are mobilising women and young people, and money has already been raised to facilitate transport and participation,” the source said.

The source added that opposition political parties, including National Unity Platform, Alliance for National Transformation, Forum for Democratic Change, and People’s Front for Freedom, have allegedly been invited to support the planned protest.

By press time, security officials had not confirmed whether organisers had sought police clearance. Under Ugandan law, public demonstrations must be cleared by police to ensure public safety and order.

Security sources said authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent potential violence, traffic disruption, or public disorder, particularly during the busy New Year holiday period, noting that previous unauthorised protests in Kampala have resulted in clashes and arrests.
