Kamuli, Uganda: More than 100 supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) in Kamuli District have defected to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), just days to the forthcoming general elections, citing renewed faith in President Museveni’s leadership and government programmes.
The defectors were formally received on Tuesday, December 31, 2025, at the Kamuli Resident District Commissioner’s office by the Deputy RDC, Mafumo Adonia.
Addressing the new entrants, Mafumo welcomed them to the ruling party and urged them to remain steadfast, patriotic, and committed to protecting the gains achieved under the NRM government.
“I am happy that we have received numbers from another political party who have seen the light. It is good that you have joined our party, but I appeal to you to stick to the gains brought by our government and also love your country,” Mafumo said.
He further encouraged the defectors to actively embrace government wealth-creation initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, saying these programmes are designed to uplift households and accelerate grassroots development.
“Our government is capable of developing its people through the programmes it has put in place. Embrace PDM and Emyooga so that you can improve your livelihoods,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Nanyomba Said said they had decided to abandon the opposition after becoming disillusioned with its leadership, instead choosing to rally behind the NRM and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“We have seen the light. My colleagues and I have been supporting the opposition, but we gained nothing. Some of our friends are still in prison. We have now joined NRM and we shall support Jajja Museveni because he still has the vision to lead this country,” Nanyomba said.
The defection comes at a time of intensified political mobilisation across Busoga sub-region as parties make last-minute efforts to consolidate support ahead of polling.
