Kampala, Uganda: Iran’s Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Majid Saffar, has said his country is not at war with its neighbours but is defending itself against what he described as aggression from the United States and Israel.

The envoy made the remarks on Friday after observing Juma prayers at the Uganda National Mosque, where he addressed a large congregation of Muslim faithful.

Ambassador Saffar attributed the ongoing conflict to what he called long-standing geopolitical tensions and “false accusations” that Iran is developing prohibited nuclear weapons.

“Prior to the war, we engaged in diplomatic talks despite knowing that Americans and Israelis have no respect for agreements. They abandoned talks and began bombardment raids against us in June 2025,” he said.

He further alleged that the same actors later called for a ceasefire but resumed hostilities in February 2026.

The Ambassador accused opposing forces of targeting civilian infrastructure, including schools, health facilities, and bridges, actions he said violate international law.

In a strongly worded address, Saffar declared that Iran remains resolute. “Let the whole world know that the people of Iran are strong and ready to defend every inch of their country,” he said, drawing chants of “Allahu Akbar” from sections of the congregation.

He added that any lasting peace in the Middle East would depend on resolving the Palestinian question.

Engagement with Uganda’s Muslim Leadership

Following the prayers, the Ambassador met with Shaban Ramadan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, at the Office of the National Imam.

The meeting was attended by senior Iranian embassy officials, including Cultural Attaché Naderi Abbas and First Secretary Mohsen Aghaloo, as well as Uganda Muslim Supreme Council leadership.

During the engagement, Saffar reiterated that Iran is not targeting neighbouring countries but rather military installations used against it. “We informed regional leaders not to allow their territories to be used by those pursuing war,” he said.

In his response, Mufti Mubaje expressed concern over the loss of innocent lives resulting from the conflict. “We pray that those involved come back to their senses and abandon such inhuman acts,” he said.

Ambassador Saffar also highlighted Iran’s progress in science and education, indicating that opportunities could be extended to Ugandan students once the conflict subsides. He thanked Ugandans for what he described as solidarity during the ongoing crisis.
