Banura had stopped to engage residents when speeding taxi rammed into him

According to Kikuube District Vice Chairperson Vincent Opio Alpha, Peter Banura had briefly stopped by the roadside and was interacting with locals when tragedy struck.

Kikuube, Uganda: The deceased LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube, Peter Banura Araali, died Saturday evening after a speeding taxi rammed into him moments after he stepped out of his vehicle to greet residents along the Hoima–Fort Portal road.

The fatal incident occurred at around 7:20 pm at Kamusunsi Trading Centre, just after Kiziranfumbi Town in Kikuube District.

According to Kikuube District Vice Chairperson Vincent Opio Alpha, Banura, the son of Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza, had briefly stopped by the roadside and was interacting with locals when tragedy struck.

“He had just stepped out of his car to talk to people when a fast-moving taxi heading towards Fort Portal knocked him,” Opio said.

Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

He is among at least five people confirmed dead after the taxi mini-bus reportedly lost control and rammed into pedestrians.

Several other victims sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

Banura’s sudden death has sent shockwaves across Kikuube District, with leaders and residents describing it as a devastating loss.

Authorities were yet to issue a detailed report on the cause of the crash at the time of filing this update.
