Kikuube, Uganda: Police have confirmed that Kikuube District LC5 Chairperson Peter Banura was killed after being knocked by a speeding taxi moments after he stopped to greet residents along the Hoima–Fort Portal road.
The fatal crash occurred at around 7pm on Saturday at Butyamba Village (Butyamba IDP area) in Kikuube Town Council.
According to Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma, Banura was hit by a speeding Toyota Hiace (commonly known as a drone taxi) in what authorities have described as a fatal road traffic crash.
“Police in the Albertine South Region are investigating a fatal road traffic crash involving the LC5 Chairperson of Kikuube District, Mr Banura Peter. The incident occurred in Butyamba Village (Butyamba IDP area), Kikuube Town Council, where the victim was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace motor vehicle, ACP Kituuma said.
“He was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead,” he added.

Earlier eyewitness accounts suggested that Banura had briefly stepped out of his vehicle to greet residents by the roadside when the speeding taxi rammed into him.
The sudden nature of the crash has left residents and leaders in shock, with many describing the incident as both tragic and avoidable.
Police say the driver fled the scene immediately after the crash, prompting a manhunt. “The vehicle has since been recovered and impounded by police. Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to assist with investigations,” ACP Kituuma noted in a Saturday night statement.
Banura’s death has sent shockwaves across Kikuube District and beyond. He was the son of Maj Gen Matayo Kyaligonza and a promising son of the Bunyoro Kingdom.
Kituuma said “efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to assist with the ongoing investigations.”
