Speaker Among to retire from active politics in 2031

Among’s remarks come amid ongoing political speculation about future leadership alignments within Uganda’s ruling establishment with many pointing at First Son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the likely successor of Gen Museveni.

Kampala, Uganda: The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Annet Among, has announced that she will retire from active politics in 2031, firmly dismissing speculation linking her to a possible presidential bid.

Hon Among made the declaration on Monday, April 20, while handing over Shs100 million in support of the upcoming birthday charity run for Muhoozi Kainerugaba, scheduled for April 26, 2026, in Bukedea.

Addressing attendees, the Speaker directly confronted claims that she intends to run for president. “I want to make this very clear today. I have heard a section of people out there making claims, I wouldn’t want to call it rubbish, but frankly, it is,” she said.

“There are allegations that I, Anita Among, intend to run for the presidency in 2031. I want to assure Ugandans that even where I am now, I have already overachieved. I have gone beyond what I ever expected.”

Ms Among emphasized that her political journey will come to an end in 2031. “As far as I am concerned, in 2031, I will be retiring from active politics.”

Her remarks come amid growing political conversations about succession and leadership beyond the current electoral cycle.

Pledges Support for Museveni-Endorsed Candidate

The Speaker also pledged loyalty to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, stating she would back any candidate endorsed by him when that time comes. “If my brother or any candidate endorsed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni comes forward, that is the person I will support.”

Ms Among used the occasion to confirm that Bukedea Comprehensive School has purchased running kits worth Shs100 million to support student participation in the charity run.

“As one of the directors of Bukedea Comprehensive Schools, because General Muhoozi is a patriot, the children also want to be patriots. We can only build our country when we love it and act in its best interest,” she said.

She added that the funds had already been delivered ahead of the event. “The school has decided to buy kits worth Shs100 million, and the money has already been delivered. I want to assure you that Bukedea Comprehensive School is fully prepared.”

Among further revealed that she, alongside several Members of Parliament—including those affiliated with the Patriotic League of Uganda—will take part in the run.

“I know as Members of Parliament, we are all going to join General MK on that day to run for hope and victory. I will personally be there.”

The charity run, themed “Run for Charity, Run for Hope,” is expected to attract participants from across the country, with proceeds aimed at supporting vulnerable children.
