Kampala, Uganda: A Ugandan pharmacist has unveiled ELOCID, a locally manufactured herbal formulation targeting ulcers and other gastric disorders, marking a significant step in home-grown pharmaceutical innovation.
Dr Lutoti Stephen, a lecturer at Makerere University and a two-time Ministry of Health Heroes in Health Pharmacist of the Year (2021, 2022), formulated ELOCID as a triple-therapy solution now produced by Eloipharm Uganda Limited. The product is approved by the National Drug Authority Uganda.
ELOCID combines bioactive extracts from three medicinal plants, Aspilia africana, Hoslundia opposita, and Bidens pilosa, long recognised in traditional medicine and now scientifically integrated to manage modern gastrointestinal conditions.
How ELOCID Works
The formulation is designed to reduce gastric acid secretion, lower ulcer formation, and promote healing of the stomach lining. Its plant compounds—rich in flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and essential oils—offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that help combat oxidative stress in the gut.
ELOCID also targets Helicobacter pylori, a key bacterium linked to peptic ulcers, by interfering with its ability to adhere to the stomach lining, while boosting protective mucus production.
Indications and Dosage
ELOCID is used for the symptomatic relief of gastric hyperacidity, heartburn, peptic ulcers, indigestion, and flatulence.
According to Dr Lutoti, the recommended dosage for Elocid is:
- Adults and children above 12 years: 10ml every 8 hours
- Children (1–11 years): 5ml every 8 hours
- Infants below 1 year: 2.5ml every 8 hours
For ulcer treatment, an 8-week course is advised, while milder symptoms may resolve within three days. Patients are encouraged to seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

Safety and Availability

Dr Lutoti says the product has not reported adverse side effects but is not recommended during pregnancy. Users taking blood sugar-lowering medication are advised to two-hour space administration and monitor glucose levels.
ELOCID has a rapid onset of action, within 30 minutes, and is available in 200ml bottles across pharmacies and drug shops nationwide, including Eloipharm outlets in Wandegeya and Kalerwe.
Boost for Local Health Innovation
The development of ELOCID highlights Uganda’s growing capacity to produce locally relevant medical solutions. With ulcers and related conditions affecting a significant portion of the population, accessible treatments like ELOCID could help reduce healthcare burdens and improve patient outcomes.
Dr Lutoti has, over the years, developed a range of herbal-based pharmaceutical products addressing different health conditions. Among his notable formulations is ELOCOF, a cough, flu, and sore throat syrup that gained national recognition during the COVID-19 period and contributed to his Pharmacist of the Year award.
Other products in his portfolio include: Elomal – a herbal remedy targeting malaria, Elolax – used for constipation relief and deworming and Elo-Enjo – formulated to support male and female vitality.
Together, these innovations reflect a broader research focus on natural product-based treatments for conditions such as infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and chronic diseases.
Where to Get ELOCID
ELOCID is available at Eloipharm Pharmacy Wandegeya – next to Bank of Africa, opposite Shell/KFC Wandegeya, Eloipharm Pharmacy Kalerwe – opposite Yudesi Primary School along Gayaza Road, and at leading pharmacies and drug shops nationwide.
