Nebbi, Uganda: The Alur Kingdom has secured 50 half-bursary slots for its subjects to pursue professional health training at the Nebbi School of Health Sciences for the July 2026 intake.
The Kingdom’s Prime Minister (Jadipu), Prince Lawrence Opar Angala, confirmed the development, noting that the bursaries fall under the institution’s School Support Scheme Policy and are aimed at expanding access to health education among eligible learners within the kingdom.
The slots target candidates who meet admission requirements set by the Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda, with applicants required to obtain formal recommendation from the Kingdom alongside fulfilling academic and institutional criteria.
The half-bursaries will cater for both certificate and diploma programmes designed to strengthen the region’s health workforce.
Certificate programmes include Nursing, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory, Medical Records, Public Health, and Pharmacy. Diploma options cover Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory, and Public Health.
Prince Opar commended the initiative, describing it as a strategic intervention to build a skilled workforce capable of improving healthcare delivery across the Alur region.
“This is part of broader efforts to enhance access to education and build a skilled workforce to improve community health outcomes across the kingdom,” he said.
The Deputy Principal of the institution, Okoboah Patrick, confirmed the allocation and emphasized the school’s commitment to prioritising the local community.
“Charity begins at home. Alur Kingdom covers Zombo, Nebbi and Pakwach. There is no way we can leave out the Kingdom after extending bursaries to other groups,” he said.
The school, located at the former Udende Theological Centre along the Nebbi–Zombo road in Jupangira Sub-county, was established to improve access to quality health education and produce skilled professionals to serve both local communities and the nation.
Officials say the bursary programme is expected to particularly benefit students from rural and disadvantaged backgrounds, many of whom have historically been unable to pursue tertiary education due to high costs and long travel distances to institutions in cities such as Arua, Gulu, Masindi, and Kampala.
Jadipu Opar urged eligible youth to seize the opportunity, revealing that more education support partnerships are being pursued to uplift social wellbeing and education standards within the Kingdom.
The development builds on a growing trend of education-focused interventions by cultural institutions. Last year, the Alur Kingdom secured 436 bursary opportunities for vocational training through Erussi Institute of Science and Technology and Fountain Head Institute of Management and Technology.
At the national level, Isabarongo Mwatansozi Mwogezi Butamanya, Chairperson of the Uganda Kings and Cultural Leaders Forum, also lobbied for 1,000 full-tuition scholarships in partnership with JAIN University in India, targeting youth from cultural institutions and underserved communities.
His Majesty Ubimu Phillip Rauni Ularker III has consistently championed education as a cornerstone of development, encouraging subjects to embrace learning opportunities as a pathway to transformation.
