YMCA, also featuring in their maiden final, showed early promise and nearly broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute through Makubuya Trevor, but the chance went begging—proving costly moments later when Muteesa capitalised.

Kampala, Uganda: Muteesa I Royal University clinched their first-ever Pepsi University Football League title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over YMCA Comprehensive Institute in a tense final at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo on May 2, 2026.

The decisive moment came in the 28th minute when Sam Mutambo rose highest to head home from a pinpoint cross delivered by right-back Twaha Bukenya, sealing what would be the only goal in a tightly contested encounter.

Muteesa I displayed tactical discipline and composure throughout the match, effectively managing the game and neutralising YMCA’s attacking threats. Their organised defending and calm approach under pressure underscored a side playing with confidence beyond their years.

The Masaka-based institution’s triumph is historic, achieved in just their second season in the competition. They now join Kampala University as the only teams to win the title within their first two campaigns.

With this victory, Muteesa I Royal University have firmly announced themselves as a rising force in university football, completing a remarkable journey from newcomers in 2025 to champions in 2026.

In the third-place playoff, Kampala University secured a 1-0 win over St Lawrence University, courtesy of a goal from Raymond Kiwewa.
