Tororo, Uganda: The Sub-county Chief of Akadot Sub-county in Tororo District has been killed in a head-on road crash along the Tororo–Mbale Road after a truck allegedly veered into the opposite lane while overtaking another vehicle.
The deceased has been identified as Obol Emmanuel, 55, who died on the spot following the collision that occurred at Mile 3 in Tororo Municipality at around 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
According to Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson IP Moses Mugwe Johnson, Obol was riding a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UDR 902C, when it collided head-on with an Isuzu Forward truck, registration number UBK 887W, driven by Charles Owor, 29, a resident of Bison “A” Cell in Western Division, Tororo Municipality.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the truck was travelling from Tororo towards Mbale when its driver attempted to overtake another vehicle moving in the same direction.
In the process, the truck allegedly crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the oncoming motorcycle.
Police have attributed the crash to careless overtaking by the truck driver.
Obol sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic officers from Tororo Central Police Station visited and documented the scene, recorded witness statements and conveyed the body to Tororo Municipal Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
The truck and the motorcycle were towed to Tororo Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles as investigations continue.
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution while overtaking and comply with traffic regulations to reduce road crashes.
They also reminded motorcycle riders and passengers to wear crash helmets and other protective gear at all times while travelling.
