Kyankwanzi, Uganda: Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Affairs) Hon Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo has urged President Museveni to issue an executive order temporarily suspending Uganda’s labour externalisation programme pending a comprehensive review of labour recruitment companies.
Hon Kasolo made the appeal on Sunday, July 19, during the official reintegration ceremony of 1,105 Ugandans who were evacuated from South Africa. The ceremony was held at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi and presided over by President Museveni.
Addressing the President and the returnees, Kasolo said the growing number of Ugandans seeking government assistance to return home from overseas highlighted the need for closer scrutiny of labour recruitment companies and their operations.
“Your Excellency, I think you may wish to issue an executive order to put a temporary ban on externalization of labor as we keenly screen these companies and their intentions because, really, Your Excellency, the call, the outcry for Ugandans to come back home is really too much.
Kasolo said a temporary suspension would allow government to comprehensively assess recruitment firms and strengthen safeguards for Ugandans seeking employment opportunities abroad.
The minister described the successful evacuation and reintegration exercise as a reflection of the government’s commitment to protecting Ugandans wherever they may be.
“Today, I had the honour of joining H.E. President Yoweri @KagutaMuseveni at the National Leadership Institute (NALI), Kyankwanzi, for the official reintegration ceremony of 1,105 Ugandans who were safely evacuated from South Africa.
“This homecoming is a powerful reminder that every Ugandan matters. Under the decisive leadership of H.E. the President, our Government acted swiftly to ensure the safe return of our compatriots and to support them as they rebuild their lives here at home.”
He encouraged the returnees to use their skills and experiences to contribute to national development and take advantage of government wealth creation programmes.
“To our returning brothers and sisters, welcome back once again. Your resilience, skills, and experiences are valuable assets to our nation’s development. Together, let us seize the opportunities available through government wealth creation programmes and build a more prosperous Uganda for all.”
Kasolo also thanked all government agencies and stakeholders who contributed to the humanitarian mission.
The reintegration ceremony marked the official return of 1,105 Ugandans who had been evacuated from South Africa under a government-led humanitarian operation.
