New York, USA: France forward Kylian Mbappé has become the first player in FIFA World Cup history to win the Golden Boot at two consecutive tournaments after finishing as the top scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with 10 goals.
The Real Madrid star scored 10 goals in eight matches to finish ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who ended the tournament with eight goals.
The latest accolade follows Mbappé’s Golden Boot triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he scored eight goals.
The 27-year-old is now the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot in consecutive editions.
He also became the first player to score 10 goals in a single World Cup since Germany legend Gerd Müller achieved the feat at the 1970 tournament.
Only Just Fontaine (13 goals in 1958) and Sándor Kocsis (11 goals in 1954) have scored more goals in a single FIFA World Cup.
Mbappé’s goals came against Senegal (2), Iraq (2), Sweden, Paraguay, Morocco, and England (2).
Mbappé also etched his name into football history by becoming the men’s all-time leading FIFA World Cup scorer, taking his career tally to 22 goals in 22 World Cup appearances, one more than Messi.
Messi had an opportunity to overtake Mbappé in the scoring race during Sunday’s final but failed to find the net as defending champions Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time.
The Argentine captain finished the tournament with eight goals in eight appearances.
England’s Jude Bellingham and Norway striker Erling Haaland shared third place on the scoring chart with seven goals each, while France’s Ousmane Dembélé and England captain Harry Kane finished with six goals apiece.
Spain Dominate Individual Awards
Fresh from winning their second FIFA World Cup title, Spain also completed a clean sweep of the tournament’s major individual honours.
Midfielder Rodri was named Golden Ball winner as the tournament’s best player after orchestrating Spain’s midfield throughout the competition.
Goalkeeper Unai Simón claimed the Golden Glove after conceding only one goal in eight matches while keeping a tournament-record seven clean sheets.
Spain defender Pau Cubarsí was named Young Player of the Tournament following a series of commanding performances in a defence that conceded just once in the tournament.
Spain secured the 2026 FIFA World Cup title after substitute Ferran Torres scored an extra-time winner to defeat defending champions Argentina 1-0 in the final, ending La Roja’s 16-year wait for another world title.
