New York, USA: Spain were crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time to secure a 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the final on Sunday.
Torres, who came off the bench, struck in the 106th minute at New York New Jersey Stadium after Nico Williams brilliantly kept Pedro Porro’s cross in play, allowing the Barcelona forward to fire past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
The strike, which eventually proved to be the winner, ended a much-one sided contest, handing Spain their second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their triumph in 2010, and capped a remarkable tournament for Luis de la Fuente’s side, who recovered from an underwhelming start to finish as deserving champions.
The reigning European Champions had opened their campaign with a frustrating goalless draw against Cape Verde, but steadily grew into the tournament, conceding just one goal before the final.
Despite controlling possession and creating the better chances, Spain struggled to break down Argentina’s disciplined defence for much of the match.
Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi, defended resolutely and frustrated the Spanish attack throughout normal time.
However, Spain’s persistence finally paid off in extra time when Torres found the breakthrough in the 106th minute, scoring the only goal of the match to spark wild celebrations.
The victory secured Spain’s second World Cup crown and denied Argentina the opportunity to successfully defend the title they won four years earlier.
Messi’s World Cup Dream Ends
The defeat marked a disappointing end to Lionel Messi’s quest to lift the FIFA World Cup for a second consecutive time.
Argentina’s resistance suffered a major blow late in normal time when midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the South Americans to play the entire extra period with 10 men.
The 38-year-old, playing in what is expected to be his final World Cup, was unable to inspire Argentina to another triumph as Spain’s organised defence kept the reigning champions at bay.
The South American giants did not register an attempt on target until the closing minutes of extra time as Spain’s defence comfortably contained the holders.
The victory completed a remarkable run for Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, who has now guided the country to the UEFA Nations League, Euro 2024, and the 2026 World Cup title.
