Kitende, Uganda: Defending Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC have completed the signing of Uganda Cranes forward Farouk Miya, bringing the club academy product back to St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, a decade after his record-breaking move to Europe.
The Venoms confirmed the return of the 28-year-old on Tuesday through the club’s official social media platforms as they continue strengthening their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
“We are pleased to announce the return of Farouk Miya to the club ahead of the 2026/27 season,” Vipers said in a statement.
Miya left the Kitende-based club in January 2016 for Belgian giants Standard Liege in a transfer reportedly worth $500,000, then one of the biggest overseas deals involving a Ugandan footballer.
The transfer proceeds played a significant role in financing the redevelopment of St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, which has since become one of Uganda’s premier football venues.
During his first spell with Vipers, Miya enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, scoring 20 goals in 49 appearances during the 2014/15 season as the club won the Uganda Premier League title.
A Decade Across Europe
Following his departure from Uganda, Miya built an extensive career across Europe, playing for several clubs in different leagues.
His journey included spells at Standard Liege (Belgium), Royal Excel Mouscron (Belgium), FK Sabail (Azerbaijan), HNK Gorica (Croatia), Konyaspor (Turkey), Çaykur Rizespor (Turkey), PFC Lviv (Ukraine) and most recently at Ilioupoli FC (Greece).
The versatile attacking midfielder has been training with Vipers over the past two weeks and is understood to have impressed newly appointed head coach Denis Lavagne.
Miya also returns with vast international experience. He made six appearances for Uganda’s Under-23 national team, scoring three goals, before establishing himself with the Uganda Cranes.
The midfielder has earned 79 senior international caps and scored 23 goals, making him one of Uganda’s most experienced active players.
Vipers Continue Busy Transfer Window
Miya becomes Vipers SC’s sixth signing of the current transfer window. The defending champions have also recruited Nicholas Mwere, Joel Sserunjogi, Jacques Mangoba, Gabonese goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba and returning striker Ceaser Lobi Manzoki.
The additions underline Vipers’ ambition to retain the Uganda Premier League title while mounting strong campaigns in the CAF Champions League and the CECAFA Kagame Cup in Rwanda during the 2026/27 season.
