Buyende, Uganda: The Buyende District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Geoffrey Banga Nkurunziza, has warned parents against enrolling their children in unlicensed private schools, saying such institutions compromise learners’ education and future prospects.
Nkurunziza made the remarks on Wednesday while commissioning three newly constructed classroom blocks at Nkondo, Nakawa and Kakooge Primary Schools in Buyende District.
He said many private schools begin operations without meeting the required standards and later fail to sustain quality education.
“Many people set up schools and cannot sustain the requirements. This instead destroys the children’s future. Our government schools have the capacity and qualified teachers. Parents should avoid unlicensed schools,” Nkurunziza said.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by District Education Officer (DEO) Dison Bwiire, LCV Chairperson Sharif Mangareine, members of the district planning unit led by Gideon Mugulusi, local leaders, teachers, parents and pupils.
Buyende District Education Officer Dison Bwiire commended the contractors for delivering quality work on schedule and encouraged parents to enrol more children in the beneficiary schools.
“The work done by the contractors is commendable. I ask parents and the community of Nakawa to bring more children to school. In the next financial year, Nakawa will also be given a modern latrine to improve sanitation,” Bwiire said.
He noted that the additional classrooms will help ease congestion and improve the learning environment for pupils.
Buyende District Chairperson Sharif Mangareine warned that the district would intensify enforcement against parents and guardians who fail to take their children to school.
“We have no mercy on those who don’t want to take their children to school. We shall take them to police for appropriate action. Whoever does not educate his or her child will be required to bring a sack of maize to the nearby school as a punishment,” Mangareine said.
Paul Kalikwani Mwidu, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), urged headteachers to foster strong working relationships with teachers and parents to ensure the new facilities are fully utilised.
“I commend the work done by the contractors. Headteachers should work hand in hand with teachers to ensure these classrooms benefit the learners,” he said.
