Thirty-six years ago, Ambassador Dr. Olara Otunnu stood on the threshold of history. Widely respected for his intellect, integrity, diplomatic skill, and commitment to international peace, he was considered a strong candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Many believed he possessed the qualities required to lead the world’s foremost international organization. However, as is often the case in global diplomacy, geopolitical interests and political considerations overshadowed merit, and the opportunity slipped away.

Despite that setback, Dr. Otunnu continued to distinguish himself on the world stage. His service as Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, President of the UN Security Council, and later as the UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict earned him widespread admiration.

Throughout his career, he championed the rights of vulnerable children, advocated for peaceful conflict resolution, and upheld the principles of justice, human dignity, and international cooperation. His legacy has remained one of principled leadership and selfless service.

Today, thirty-six years later, Uganda has taken a remarkable step in recognizing one of its most accomplished sons. By endorsing Dr. Olara Otunnu for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, the nation has demonstrated a spirit of reconciliation, maturity, and unity that rises above past political differences. This endorsement is not merely about supporting an individual; it is about affirming that national interest and excellence should transcend political divisions.

The decision reflects an understanding that the greatest asset any nation possesses is its people. When individuals of exceptional ability are given the opportunity to serve at the highest levels, they bring honor not only to themselves but also to their country. Uganda’s endorsement sends a powerful message that merit, experience, and integrity deserve recognition regardless of past disagreements.

The words of Psalm 133:1 beautifully capture the significance of this moment: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Unity does not imply the absence of differing opinions or political competition. Rather, it signifies the willingness to come together when the greater good of the nation is at stake. In celebrating one of Uganda’s finest diplomats, the country demonstrates that reconciliation is possible and that national pride can triumph over division.

Dr. Otunnu’s extensive experience in diplomacy, international law, peacebuilding, and humanitarian advocacy makes him well suited for the immense responsibilities of leading the United Nations. At a time when the world faces complex challenges, including armed conflicts, climate change, humanitarian crises, and growing inequality, the international community requires leaders of wisdom, moral courage, and proven competence. His lifelong dedication to protecting children affected by war and promoting peaceful solutions reflects the values upon which the United Nations was founded.

Whether or not this endorsement ultimately leads to his election, the gesture itself carries profound significance. It marks a chapter of healing, mutual respect, and renewed confidence in Uganda’s ability to present capable leaders on the global stage. It reminds all Ugandans that unity is a source of strength and that a nation progresses when it celebrates excellence without regard to political history.

As Uganda looks to the future, this moment serves as an inspiration to younger generations: that perseverance, integrity, and faithful service leave a lasting legacy. Above all, it demonstrates that when a nation stands together in support of its most deserving citizens, it reflects the enduring truth that unity remains one of the greatest foundations of national greatness.
