Kampala, Uganda: Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) Registrar General Ms Mercy K. Kainobwisho has been recognised as the Public Sector Trendsetter for her transformative leadership in modernising Uganda’s business registration and intellectual property ecosystem through digital innovation.

The URSB Chief was honoured for spearheading reforms that have transformed Uganda’s business registration system, strengthened intellectual property administration, enhanced corporate governance and accelerated the digitisation of public services, positioning Uganda as an increasingly competitive destination for innovation and investment.

She received the accolade at the 7th Business Trendsetters Forum, Trends Expo and Awards Gala, at Sheraton Kampala Hotel under the theme, “People, Purpose, and Artificial Intelligence in Business.”

The annual forum brought together policymakers, business executives, entrepreneurs, innovators and development partners to explore how people-centred leadership and artificial intelligence are reshaping the future of business in Uganda.

Speaking after receiving the award, Ms Kainobwisho encouraged entrepreneurs and business leaders to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) as a strategic tool for innovation, productivity and long-term competitiveness.

She observed that businesses which successfully integrate AI solutions into their operations will be better positioned to respond to changing market demands, improve efficiency and unlock new growth opportunities.

Her remarks resonated with this year’s forum theme, which focused on the growing role of technology, innovation and purpose-driven leadership in transforming organisations and economies.

Over the past five years of her reign, URSB has rolled out a series of digital reforms simplifying company registration, improving access to intellectual property services and enhancing transparency and efficiency in business regulation, reforms widely credited with improving Uganda’s ease of doing business.

The award adds to the growing recognition of Kainobwisho’s leadership in advancing innovation, promoting entrepreneurship and strengthening Uganda’s intellectual property regime.

Under her stewardship, URSB has expanded digital service delivery, promoted awareness of intellectual property rights among innovators and creators, and strengthened collaboration with regional and international institutions to position Uganda as an emerging hub for innovation and enterprise.

As artificial intelligence increasingly reshapes global economies, Kainobwisho challenged businesses to view technology not as a threat but as an opportunity to improve competitiveness while creating sustainable value for customers and society.

The Business Trendsetters Forum has, over the years, evolved into one of Uganda’s leading platforms for recognising outstanding leadership, innovation and enterprise. Beyond the awards, the event features business exhibitions, networking sessions and high-level discussions on emerging trends shaping Uganda’s private and public sectors.
