His appointment places him at the helm of one of Uganda’s most strategic military formations, responsible for presidential protection, safeguarding key national installations and conducting specialised operations.
Maj Gen Mweteise is regarded as one of the UPDF’s experienced Special Forces officers, having served in a number of operational and command roles within the elite unit over the years.
Throughout his military career, he has been associated with assignments involving high-level security operations, strategic planning and the protection of critical national assets, responsibilities that have made him a familiar figure within Uganda’s defence establishment.
His latest appointment reflects continued confidence from the UPDF High Command in his leadership and operational experience.
Alongside his appointment as Acting Commander of the Special Forces Command, Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru was elevated to the acting rank of Major General with immediate effect.
The promotion recognises the greater responsibilities attached to leading the SFC, one of the UPDF’s most specialised formations.
He succeeds Maj Gen David Mugisha, who is preparing to attend the National Defence College (NDC) abroad as part of advanced strategic security studies.
Leading one of Uganda’s most strategic military units
The Special Forces Command occupies a unique position within the UPDF. Among its principal responsibilities are protection of the President and First Family, security of State House and other strategic national installations, counter-terrorism and specialised military operations, rapid response to high-risk security situations and support for national and regional security missions when assigned.
Because of these responsibilities, the command is widely regarded as one of the most sensitive appointments within Uganda’s military leadership.
Expectations ahead
Gen Mweteise assumes office at a time when the UPDF continues to modernise its capabilities while expanding regional security cooperation and strengthening its readiness against evolving security threats.
His leadership is also expected to build on ongoing institutional reforms within the Special Forces Command as Uganda continues investing in specialised training, technology and strategic partnerships.
