Kamuli, Uganda: Police in Kamuli District are investigating the death of a 14-year-old Senior Four student who allegedly died by suicide following a dispute over a mobile phone.
The deceased has been identified as Basoome Amuza, a Senior Four student at Irundu Secondary School in Buyende District and son of Dhikusooka Abasa, a resident of Nabirumba Parish in Nabwigulu Sub-county.
According to police, the teenager’s body was found hanging from a tree behind his father’s home before it was retrieved by officers.
Police later handed over the body to the family for burial as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
Preliminary information indicates that the incident may have followed a disagreement after the student reportedly returned home with a mobile phone whose source he allegedly did not explain to his parents.
The LCIII Chairperson of Nabwigulu Sub-county, George Boogere, said the teenager was reportedly questioned by his father about the phone before he was instructed the following morning to go and dig in the garden. He was later found dead.
“This is the second tragedy of people taking their lives in just two weeks. I call upon leaders and religious leaders to intervene,” Boogere said.
He urged people experiencing emotional distress or depression to seek help and share their challenges with trusted family members, friends, religious leaders or counsellors instead of suffering in silence.
Muyangu Swaibu, the Chairperson of Private Schools in Kamuli District and a resident of the same village, described the incident as deeply disturbing and appealed for stronger communication between parents and children.
“The boy had a chance to talk to his parents about where he got the phone from, but he refused and took his life. Parents should always talk to their children,” Muyangu said.
Police said investigations remain ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Community leaders have since called for increased counselling and guidance programmes in schools and homes to help learners cope with emotional and social pressures.
